Submission Guidelines

Guernica will only accept manuscript queries by email. We no longer accept queries by snail mail. Before sending in your query, however, please check our submission guidelines listed below to determine the type of material that best fits our publishing house. 

As with our queries, we will only accept manuscripts via email attachment. Please send manuscripts as Word documents (.doc or .rtf) to michaelmirolla@guernicaeditions.com. The manuscripts should be single-spaced, in a 12-point easy-to-read type. If at all possible, please give the manuscripts a name that includes the title and the author: The_Dubliners_Franz_Kafka.

We do our best to respond ASAP to queries and requested manuscripts, but it may take between six-eight months before an evaluation can be made and a response generated.

Guernica World Editions

An exciting new imprint featuring fiction and poetry by authors from outside Canada’s borders. Please note, while we accept submissions by non-Canadian authors for the Guernica World Editions imprint, acceptance and publication of books by non-Canadian authors requires an agreement that differs substantially from that for Canadian-authored books.

1366 Books

1366 Books is home to works of accessible yet innovative and experimental fiction—works that challenge the conventions of narrative and form, and perhaps even challenge the conventions of the sentence or the page itself. We seek to explode readers’ expectations and explore the possibilities of the novel and the short story. We welcome manuscripts that meet the above criteria by all Canadian writers, including writers of colour, Indigenous writers, LGBTQ+ writers, writers with disabilities, and others who identify as part of marginalized groups. We read manuscripts all year round and try to respond within three months. Manuscripts should be about 20,000 to 40,000 words, or 70 to 150 pages. Please write 1366 editor Stuart Ross at 1366Books@gmail.com with a brief cover letter and a PDF of your manuscript.

The Guernica Prize for Literary Fiction

The Guernica Prize recognizes the best literary fiction novel that pushes boundaries and is cutting edge. Each entry must be an unpublished novel of at least 40,000 words. A $50 entry fee (online submission through Submittable only) must accompany each submission. Authors may submit more than one manuscript but each manuscript must include a separate entry fee. The name of the author or anything identifying the author should appear nowhere in the manuscript.

The prize consists of $1,000 and a publication contract with Guernica Editions. The winning author agrees to publication with Guernica. Please name your file your manuscript title or the first three words of the manuscript title if the title is longer than three words.

The Guernica Prize is open to Canadian citizens and/or residents of Canada only. Please note that submissions to the prize are final. If a submission is retracted, there is no refund of the entry fee.

Woman, Life, Freedom: Poems for the Iranian Revolution

*Before submitting, we encourage you to read this piece by the anthology's editors, in which they explain what kind of poems they are looking for.

Please read the call carefully and follow the instructions.
 
1. Poems in English or translated into English (accompanied by the original text).
2. Open to residents of all countries and continents.
3. We strongly encourage submissions by minorities within Iran and among Iranian diaspora communities in terms of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), language, etc., as well as people of Iranian heritage and background.
4. We also encourage submissions by poets from the Middle East.
5. For translations
(a) submitted by the poet: Please include the translator’s permission, the translator’s and poet’s bio (maximum 100 words each), and contact information plus website and social media links for both.
(b) submitted by the translator: Please include the poet’s permission, the poet’s and translator’s bio (maximum 100 words each), and contact information plus website and social media links for both.
Please submit both the original poem and the translation.
6. Maximum 3 poems and a total of 6 pages.
7. Include all poems in ONE Word document, Ariel or Times New Roman 12 point size, single spaced.
8. We are unable to accept print or email submissions. All submissions should go through Guernica Editions Submittable portal. Submittable is an online portal that makes the submission process streamlined and easy. It allows writers to submit their work to magazines, publishers, and contests online.
9. Multiple submissions will be discarded. Submit only once, one document of maximum 6 pages including maximum of 3 poems.
10. Include the biographical information of poet and translator in the 'Cover Letter' section on Submittable.
11. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please withdraw your poems if accepted elsewhere. If you want to withdraw one poem, use the message or note section of Submittable to send us a note about unavailability of the poem. We do accept poems previously published on social media.
12. All poets and translators whose work is chosen will be asked to sign a declaration that the work is their own original creation and that they hold full rights to it.
13. Submissions to this anthology are free.
14. All poets and translators will be paid with one copy of the anthology.
15. If our fundraiser is successful, we would like to pay a small sum to the contributors in addition to a copy of the anthology.

Donations to fund this anthology's publication and support the creative voices it features may be made through the GoFundMe page. 

All donations will be acknowledged. 
Please note that all poems submitted will be evaluated anonymously for inclusion regardless of financial donations made to the anthology.
